Wild Dog Mail Trail 2011

Return Mail : 11th - 12th June 2011

The Wild Dog Mail Trail, retracing the steps of mailman Hugh O`Sullivan through the breathtaking Wyperfeld National Park, from the Kow Plains Homestead to the Pine Plains Lodge is set to return June 11th – 12th 2011 over the Queen's Birthday long weekend. The 68km walk, aims to get people active in walking, enjoy the camaraderie of fellow trekkers, learn a little about local history and view some of the Mallee’s spectacular wilderness.

The inaugural Wild Dog Mail Trail Event took place in April 2009 and saw 56 participants test mind and body in the grueling two day hike. The event catered for the differing skills of participants; from the novice to the extremely fit; allowing all to test themselves with the encouragement of teamwork and the safety in the organisation. The event won a Mildura Rural City Council Community Event Award!

This year’s event will start at the historic Kow Plains Homestead, Cowangie on Saturday June 11th. Traveling through Skeleton Well, Ross’s Springs, Majorlock Soak, to the overnight camp spot at the Twelve Mile Patch, where hot showers and camp oven tea will revive weary bodies ready for an amazing day two. An early morning start along the infamous ridgeback through Wyperfeld to Sandmount, Millers Tank across the dry Wirrengren Lake bed to the finish point of the welcoming Pine Plains Lodge. Although the steep sandy hills are energy sapping, the view is spectacular and it feels like you are walking on top of the Wyperfeld National Park.

Entry Fee is $180, which covers all meals, showers, transport of camping gear, safety and logistics. The walk again caters for all walking abilities with the novice section covering 34km over two days and the experienced section a 68km slog. Depending on interest an open section could be organized for participants who want to make their own pace and can supply their own G.P.S and are competent in its use.

To register for the event, please fill out the Entry Form.
