A Rich History

Murrayville was settled in 1910 and named after the Premier of Victoria at the time, John Murray. Settlers first lived in tents then erected shelters from whatever they could find, often sheds with iron roofs and walls of local pine. The pioneers of Murrayville were luckier than others in the Mallee because, despite having low rainfall, the area has reliable underground water. The district has always been predominately a grain growing and sheep area but recent years have seen farming enterprises such as olives, goats, permaculture and potatoes become part of the rural scene.

Murrayville Today

Today, Murrayville is a small but thriving, country town. The town today combines the relaxed lifestyle and community spirit of traditional rural life, with the facilities and conveniences of a much larger rural centre.

Murrayville in the Future

Abundant underground water supplies have always been a driving factor in the development of Murrayville and this will become even more important in the future.
